As we kick off #NEDAW and #EDAW, it is important to recognize that our relationship with eating can fall on a spectrum. Many #femaleathletes may struggle with eating, yet not necessarily meet criteria for an eating disorder. Regardless, it is important to reach out to a healthcare professional for help as disordered eating behaviors in any capacity can still be harmful to your physical and mental health. Female athletes can face a significant amount of pressure in regards to the perceived way they should "look" both societally and within sports culture.

From a societal perspective, girls/women are often pressured to focus on thinness, being "toned" (with the caveat of having some muscle but not too much), having perfect teeth or hair, clear skin, etc. Within sport, athletes may also be expected to prescribe to a specific body type or shape. As a swimmer that may mean broad, strong shoulders. For a distance runner that may mean being incredibly lean with long legs.

Oftentimes, athletes are able to identify the societal ideal as being unrealistic and unbalanced, but it is important to recognize that the athlete body ideal is also one-size-fits-all and frequently unhealthy. For example, an athlete who is exercising multiple times per day and restricting their diet in order to fulfill perceptions on what they believe they need to look like in sport to perform well is unhealthy.

An athlete with a healthy body ideal recognizes their body will likely look different from that of the societal body ideal or athlete body ideal. They may have less muscle, more body fat, curves in different places, acne, a mobility device, etc. Athletes who prioritize health over aesthetic have a better approach to not only their physical health but also their mental health. When we focus on body diversity and take the pressure off achieving unrealistic body ideals, we actually have the opportunity to fuel, train, and recover in a way that promotes our health which then helps us to perform our best athletically and remain healthy.

Let's be the generation to ditch these silly, unrealistic body ideals and focus on health. Body diversity and acceptance will always be more balanced than rigid body ideals.
